Is This Space Dementia-Friendly?
When someone is living with dementia, the spaces around them matter more than most people realise. The right environment can reduce confusion and anxiety, support independence, and help a person feel safe and like themselves — even as things change.
I created this checklist because I couldn’t find one that felt genuinely useful for everyday families and carers — something you could actually walk through a room with, rather than a clinical audit designed for aged care architects.
It covers five areas: lighting, noise and sound, layout and navigation, routine cues and identity, and safety. You don’t need to act on everything at once. Use it as a starting point, and come back to it as needs change.
Who is this checklist for?
Families and carers supporting someone at home · People newly diagnosed wanting to review their own space · NDIS support coordinators and aged care workers · Anyone wanting to make a home or care environment more dementia-friendly
